Rainbow And Pinkie's Conversation

I haven't read over this, just typed it up quickly. Forgive grammar and anything else.

The weather team was just as busy preparing for the upcoming storm as everyone else in Ponyville. Most ponies assumed the pegasai's job consisted of little more than moving clouds around, and on an especially involved day figuring out which areas of Ponyville got a little rain and which parts just had a lot of cloud cover. What the others often failed to realize was just how intricate their work could be. Putting together a storm the size of the one coming up was like a puzzle. Certain pieces had to fit together correctly or it could throw the entire thing off. Because of this intricately done work, the end result was something more like a finely choreographed dance.

Most of the work was done, it was now just the little details that needed to be seen to. Rainbow Dash, deciding the rest of the team would be fine without her, was lounging on a cloud over the center of Ponyville. She was pretty much expected to slack off so there was no guilt lost in her lazy afternoon. She was just about to get comfortable for a nap when the clouds just adjacent to hers split and a mass of balloons lifted up through the wisps. Dash watched with wide eyes as a pink filly came up just under the balloons with their strings tied around her middle. "Pinkie Pie? What are you doing?!"

"Hi Rainbow Dash! I saw you sitting up here and wanted to talk to you but didn't think you'd come down to talk to me so then I thought maybe I could just shout up to you but then everyone would hear what we were saying and I thought that would be a CRAZY thing to do so I found some balloons and came up to you because, like I said, I wanted to talk."

Dash's brow furrowed. "Yeah? Well I don't want to talk." She jumped into the air with nothing more to say, wings fanning out to catch the current of the wind. She heard Pinkie's voice calling behind her but with each powerful flap of her wings the voice grew more distant. Habit took her to Sweet Apple Acres and out over the vast orchard. She picked a tree at random and landed in its branches, breathing a sigh of relief. Even if Pinkie realized where she'd been headed there would be no way any pony would be able to find her.

"Hiya Rainbow!"

Dash screamed when Pinkie stretched her neck down from several branches above. "We have't played this game in awhile!"

"Gah!" More out of shock than anything, Rainbow tore from the tree and took off through the sky. Out over the beach, she tucked her wings in tight and dove headfirst into the water. Once submerged, Dash opened her magenta eyes to see a darker underwater world with no sound...and Pinkie headed her way in flippers and goggles. Rainbow screamed again sending a whirlpool of bubbles to the surface. She shot from the water and headed for the mountain range. Finding a cave, she ducked quickly inside and ran down into the enveloping darkness. And then a beam of light came out of nowhere. Pinkie held up a flashlight and giggled.

Rainbow's jaw dropped. "How do you do that?! No matter where I go you're already there!"

Pinkie shrugged. "It's kind of my thing."

"Well I've had enough of your thing!" Rainbow stalked hotly back through the cave and out into the failing light of day, Pinkie close behind.

"Rainbow Dash, please! I just want to talk for a minute!"

"Talk about what?" Rainbow whipped around to glare at Pinkie, advancing on her. "About how Applejack and I being together is wrong? About how much you disapprove? About how it really stinks when one of your best friends can't even talk to you because she can't stand the idea of what's going on?"

"Stop!" By this point Pinkie was pressed back against the mountain wall, ears as flat as her hair and tears in her big blue eyes. And Dash couldn't bring herself to care. It was a lot easier being angry than to admit how much she was hurt.

"Please Rainbow Dash! Just let me talk for a minute!"

"You've got ten seconds."

Pinkie just looked at her sadly for a minute. Eventually she took a big, deep breath in and said, "I'm really sorry if I hurt yours and Applejack's feelings but when you both came to the bakery and told me what Derpy already told me and Twilight I didn't know what to say because my papa always told me it was wrong but I love Gummy and some people think that's wrong but he makes me sooo happy and Twilight says that maybe my papa was wrong because we all lived waaaaaay far away from Ponyville and balloons don't belong on rock farms."

Rainbow stared at her for a moment before muttering a, "What?" Pinkie took another big gulp of air to start over again but Rainbow stopped her by clopping a hoof over the pink pony's mouth. "I heard you! I just..." She let go of Pinkie and took a step back to sit on her haunches. "I just don't get it."

"I just wanted to say I'm sorry, Dash. It doesn't matter to me anymore."

But Rainbow frowned in reply. "You really hurt Applejack, Pinkie." And that was worse than feeling hurt herself. It had been hard to see Applejack cry and to not be able to do a thing about it. It had only served in making her angrier at Pinkie Pie in the process. "So all of sudden you're fine with it? I have a hard time believing that."

"Not all of the sudden," Pinkie argued gently. "I talked to Fluttershy and Twilight and they helped me see that it shouldn't matter. That it doesn't matter. Because you love each other and you're happy and that is all that matters."

Dash quirked an eyebrow. "Really? So you're completely fine with is just because we're happy?"

Moving a hoof in the dirt, pinkie looked down. "It's going to take some getting used to." She looked up quickly to add, "But I'll get used to it! I love you both and miss you so very much that I haven't been sleeping and only eating really yucky horrible baking mistakes! Please, Rainbow Dash, let me be your friend again!"

Despite herself, Rainbow gave into a crooked half smile. "Well...you look like crap."

"I know!" Pinkie whined desperately. "I'm so so so so so so sorry, Dashie. And I know it's going to take some time to forgive me. I talked to Applejack and she said the same thing. But please, let's be friends again." In a quiet voice that was more reminiscent of Fluttershy than Pinkie she added, "I've been so lonely."

Rainbow sighed deeply, shaking her head. "I don't know, Pinkie. You saying what you said, or more accurately not saying anything was like...like if I said I couldn't be your friend anymore because you're pink." Pinkie didn't look up but she sniffled. "Oh, for Celestia's sake, don't cry! You're Pinkie Pie! You're not even supposed to know how to cry!"

"But I feel so icky!"

Huffing quietly, Rainbow got up and enveloped Pinkie in a hug. "Stop feeling icky. I still want to be your friend, Pinkie. Applejack and I both do, an dwe miss you, too. But this ins't something that's just going to magically get better. It's going to take a little while for us to get back to where we were. If we ever can."

"I understand," Pinkie cried. "I'm so sorry."

"I accept your apology, but if you say you're sorry again..."

'I won't!"

The wind had picked up considerably and the dark clouds being pushed in over head were giving off small sprinklings of rain. Both ponies looked up and Rainbow Dash let go of Pinkie. "By morning the storm will be here full force."

"Applejack said I could go to the farm for the storm if it's okay with you."

Rainbow looked at Pinkie, weighing the options. After a minute she nodded slowly. "Yeah, it's fine. It'll be safer for you there." She shook her mane as a cold whip of wind mussed up her fur. "We should get back."

"Um, Dashie?"

"Can I have a ride?"

A small laugh escaped Rainbow's lips and she shook her head. "Come on." Pinkie climbed onto Rainbow's back and wrapped her forelegs around her friend's neck. Dash took off into the air as the rain and wind both picked up speed. When Pinkie let out a sudden and unexpected whoop, a sucking and then popping sound followed quickly behind. At a glance back, Rainbow could see Pinkie's hair had finally turned back to normal.

"I'll drop you off at the bakery but get to the farm as soon as you can, okay!"

As soon as Rainbow Dash was sure that Pinkie was safely inside, she took off once more to head into the shy and see where she was needed.
